The concept of the Aberdeen Lean Forum was developed in January of 2007, with the first meeting on April 24, 2007. Forum founder Mike Thelen wished to create a dues-free roundtable where people from all industries could share knowledge and learn new techniques to further prosperity in the northeast region of South Dakota. The initial meetings involved five local companies representing healthcare, manufacturing and assembly. The Forum currently has representation from healthcare, manufacturing, assembly, construction, retail, service groups and education.

The Aberdeen Lean Forum or its member companies are occasionally featured in the local newspaper, the Aberdeen American News. As stories are published, they can be found on the news page.
